We are now in 2020 and the rat is about to enter, another new year means another new trend, or at least the further growth of what has been becoming more and more popular. For sure, everyone will continue to speak about the 4.0 world of technology / leadership, without many tangibles to cite as examples.
EQ will continue to make a comeback; for me the most important growth area will be Influencing Techniques, which obviously relies on a medium to high level of EQ. The reasons I believe this is the most important growth area, are many, here are a few:
Millennials are not prepared to “do as they are told”, they need to know why
As things become tougher, and stress levels rise, people want to know the benefits of what they are being asked to do
There are more and more options available, people need to be influenced to select one
To develop your influencing techniques, begins with self-awareness – this sounds simple, it is not. An example; I was recently working with a group of doctors who work for a leading pharmaceutical company, their role was sales. When I asked them if their client presentations where “informational” of “persuasive”, most said informational, if you are in a sales position that is not the correct answer.
Once you have a true assessment of where you are in terms of influencing others the next step is competency development. I look forward to working with you on that part of the journey.
